Eglington takes top 10 in
Supermoto at Croft
December 28, 2002 - Mike Eglington, British Supermoto
and Endurance racer, took 9th place in the 450 B Final
at Croft Circuit this week-end.
The weather was brilliant with blue skies and the sun
shining. It wasn't as cold as the Brand's race and we
managed to get there and set up by 9.00 Friday night - a
definite first for us!
Saturday dawned equally as nice and the first race
started off well with Mike and another rider playing
"passing tag" for most of the race. Mike wasn't sliding
as much as he wanted to and was still taking the time to
get used to the bike.
In the semi-final, Mike improved his racing speed by 3
seconds overall in spite of getting a bad line on the
fast dirt section of the circuit. "I came into the sharp
hairpin too fast and my back was sliding way out. It
lost me a lot of time as I couldn't turn in where I
should have turned in", said Mike. He managed to make up
some time and wanted to pass a rider on the last lap but
felt the pass he was lining up for would be dangerous,
particularly as the rider in front was a novice.
But it was his final where he finally stopped getting
used to the bike and had a real race. Mike started 13th
on the grid and made up 6 places at the start, staying
in with the top 10 riders. There were 4 riders in his
group that were racing quite tightly, but Mike kept his
position and finished 9th, gaining him more points in
the Novice Championship.
Mike, commenting on the final said, "It felt good. I
really enjoyed it and the bike went well. I was worried
as we sat at the start line for so long, the bike had
started to overheat, but I felt that I had to really go
for it this time. I'll try a lot harder in the next
race."
