"The book was written in Cambridge by John Starte. I had always been concerned about road safety, particularly with young kids just learning to ride and it seemed an ideal opportunity to combine their desire to promote their book and my desire to help promote safe biking."

A fast way to safety

Cambridge Evening News - February 14, 1990

A Cambridge motorcycle racer is being sponsored by Her Majesty's Stationery Office, to promote safer motoring.

Mr Mike Eglington's concern for the safety of motorcyclists, particularly the young and inexperienced, prompted his approach to publicise HMSO books.

It is the first time in its 204-year history that Norwich-based HMSO has entered sports sponsorship.

Mr Eglington, 31, of Camside, Chesterton, said the tie-up would also provide much-needed sponsorship for his hobby.

"Too many young guys ride around like maniacs and miss out on all the fun. I want to promote the pleasure they can have", he said.

He takes part in the British Supersport 400 Motorcycle Championship this year with the HMSO logo on his clothing and Suzuki RGV 250 bike. He already receives sponsorship from an oil company.

He will also man stalls at race meetings promoting HMSO publications on safe riding, motorcycle maintenance and preparation for the MOT test.

Mr Eglington, an architectural technician races only as a hobby. He says he is being paid "a four figure sum" by HMSO in the sponsorship deal.

A motorcyclist for 13 years, he has been racing for nine years and last year he reached the British Supersport 400 Championships.
