"We worked throughout the year promoting HMSO and all their products and were credited as a good example of successful publicity. Sponsorship needs to be a two-way street with benefits going to both the sponsor and the rider."

HMSO puts mark on motorbike safety

Daily Telegraph - February 10, 1990 - Her Majesty's Stationery Office is going into sports sponsorship for the first time in its 204-year history to promote safe motoring.

the Cambridge-based motorcyclist Mike Eglington, 31, will roar around the circuits in the British Supersport 400 Motorcycle Championship this season with the HMSO logo displayed on his clothing and his Suzuki RGV racer.

He will be publicising HMSO's latest publication, How Safe if Your Motorcycle?, described as a Ministry of Transport handbook on mechanical safety, out on Feb 27 at £4.95 in paperback.

He will also promote other HMSO motoring booklets and books, including the Highway Code, with sales of more than one million annually, and Driving, the official manual.

Mr Philip Brooks, deputy director of publishing at HMSO's Norwich headquarters, said last night: "HMSO is now operating in a commercial environment and we are really looking towards a high profile in our marketing."

HMSO declined "for commercial reasons" to say how much it was paying but said it was "a reasonable four-figure sum, not big money".

Mr Eglington said there were 45,000 motorcycling accidents a year, many of which would have been avoidable if riders checked their bikes regularly.
